A Sense of Place A Sense of Place
Terroir is the confluence of elements that make a place special: the climate, the soil, the character of the land. Borrowed from the French, the term terroir evokes that intangible essence that makes each region - and each vineyard - truly unique. Terroir gives a wine its soul.
At Frei Brothers Reserve, terroir is our guide. When we select our grapes, we look at the terroir of the vineyard. When we craft our wines, we think about how to express that terroir in the bottle. We understand why the same grape variety can create an entirely different wine, depending on where it was grown. Our Chardonnay embodies this notion, with its cool-climate flavors of orange zest and green apple - characteristics unique to Chardonnay grown in the Russian River Valley.
